Discover your True Life Purpose

Lesson 3: Discover Your True Life Purpose

“How do I find my life purpose?” is one of the most common questions asked in my workshops. I have been guiding people for over twenty years on this topic and I have a few recommendations.

Other people can help you, but only you can truly define your life purpose. Listening to your heart, your true feelings is the first and most important step. Your life purpose is closely aligned with those areas of life you have the most passion or interest about.  It is those areas that you are continually attracted to.

Many times your life purpose is like a paradox, a seemingly self-contradictory statement proves to be true. Your life purpose is associated with a trait or quality that you have come to planet earth to master. The paradox is that you are attracted to certain situations (or lessons) but they are difficult to master.

Your life purpose is a life path that will have challenges. Your life purpose is what you want for yourself, not what other people think you should do or be.

Here are some suggestions and insights that can help you start clarifying your life purpose. Have a notebook, sheet of paper, or diary to make notes.

  1. Do you prefer to work with people instead of things/objects. Working with people would mean being in some type of customer service, healing arts, or team/collaborative activities. Preferring to work on things/objects means you find fulfillment fixing things such as a mechanic or repair person. It could be designing or creating something new, but preferring to do it by yourself.
  2. Most people who enjoy working with objects normally find their purpose easily. For people who enjoy helping people it is more of a challenge accepting that is their life purpose. Helping people is more of an intangible than working on or fixing things.
  3. If you are a people person, then we could say your general life purpose is to help people, help themselves.
  4. Here are some types of pathways for a life purpose of helping people. Which one do you feel attracted to the most? You may not be involved with one of these categories, but select one that you feel drawn towards.
    • You could be a Counselor of some type. This means you enjoy helping people find answers or insights to their personal problems. This is usually in a one-on-one setting. You could be professionally trained and have a professional job being paid to “counsel” people. You could also be a person that others just naturally go to for advice. In either situation, other people sense that they can come to you for assistance.
    • You could be an Educator of some type. This means you help people understand themselves in group settings. You have an innate ability to help people in a group setting. Traditionally this would be a school teacher or college professor. This would also include instructing classes on various topics of interest in adult education. It could include classes such as yoga, meditation, wellness, or nutrition. As an Educator you find joy in sharing your wisdom (life experiences) with groups of people.
    • You could be a Healer of some type. This means you enjoy helping people “heal a hurt.” You would be attracted to massage, reiki, nursing, medical doctor, or other “healing arts.” You just naturally radiate a healing presence and others find comfort by your touch and experience healing or uplifting energy.
    • You could be an Administrative/Organizer This is someone who enjoys working with people, but they enjoy helping people be more organized or integrate into organizations. The Administrator/Organizer could be associated with People Helping People or People Working With Things. Typical examples are: Office Managers, General Mangers, Business Presidents, Volunteer Coordinators, or School Administrators.

So, what did you learn from Lesson 3?

How can this material help you clarify your life purpose?

It is not an easy process to transition yourself into your life purpose. You may have to go against what others think you should do.
Pinpointing your Life Purpose is a process of taking steps and listening to your heart's desire. Over time you will be pleasantly surprised with the insights you receive.

Here is a simple way to determine if you are living your life purpose in some manner.

  • How do you feel about your life? DO you feel pretty good with your life, but realize it could be better?
  • Do you have more UP days than DOWN days?
  • Do you have people you can share with freely or do you feel isolated and by yourself?

If you said YES to all three, then you are on your life purpose path. It may change over time, but you are heading in the right direction.

If you said NO to all three, then very likely you are living a life determined by somebody else. You will probably need to make major changes in your life, to get back on track.

A personal story that might help

As a young person I was always drawn towards fixing my bicycle. I also enjoyed helping my father build carpentry projects. They always seemed fun and interesting. In high school and college I was drawn towards physical sciences and engineering. I graduated from college with a Mechanical Engineering degree.

While pursuing my engineering degree, I became bored with the study of physical sciences. I discovered a fascination with sociology, philosophy, psychology, and religious studies. I wanted to know my inner world much better than understanding the physical world better.

I remained in engineering and obtained my degree, but it was never my passion. I discovered I enjoyed the people aspect of engineering and not the actual design aspect. But even that was not fulfilling. It was fine. I didn't feel frustrated or unhappy. Engineering just did not create a passion within even though it was easy.

When I was twenty-eight years old I discovered through a series of events and classes my real passion was for a better understanding myself and others from a spiritual perspective. This began my journey towards spiritual enlightenment. In meditation with my Ascended Masters, I soon realized that my life purpose was to help people understand themselves from a spiritual perspective. Engineering was just a means to an end to support my physical needs while on the spiritual journey.

Spiritual enlightenment for myself and helping others did not come easy. I had numerous lessons to learn and it has taken me some time to master. However, by not denying my heart's desire" I have attained mastery in areas of life that I would have never dreamed of in my early years.

What does this mean? It would have been easy to remain an engineer doing what I innately already knew how to do. I chose to follow my inner feelings and listen to my "still small voice within" and follow a path of my heart's desire instead of an easier, less challenging path.

My life purpose is to attain spiritual mastery and share it with others so they can attain it as well. I do this as an Educator and Consultant. Having this very clear by the time I was twenty-eight helped me with an inner reference for making like decisions.
